Free write (basic ideas)

Throughout the novels Native Son and a Clockwork Orange the theme of youth culture is evident throughout. Both texts centre upon stories of young male protagonists, how they violently react to certain situations and the consequences these have on their and other peoples lives. Both authors also examine definitive features that contribute to and influence the roots of the variety of youth culture. For example, in both texts, Burgess and Wright can be seen to discuss the influence of communism on the young…
Within a Clockwork Orange, one of the most evident ways in which Burgess addresses youth culture is the inclusion of the created language “nadsat.” This language is what the younger characters use to communicate with; furthermore, much of the narrator’s description is in nadsat. An example of this is the line “…” The use of this invented language has many connotations. It can be taken that, the structure of both novels also contributes to the theme of youth culture. Wright was sculpted the novel into three sections, this could emulate the three main stages of early life: childhood, adolescence and adulthood. This could also be said about the three-volume structure of clockwork orange…

  1. This will work but consider narrowing the focus a bit. What about looking at how young men search for a sense of identity? Or how they react to punishment? A clear outline of your ideas.
